Medical illustration

Illuminating health, disease, and care for medical resources from books to animation.

Clinical research

Illustration to visually communicate key messages in a memorable way. Examples include showing anatomical variation, disease, surgical technique, and sharing high-level concepts such as novel treatment approaches and issues in research.

Books

Cover, figure, and plate design for publications.

Surgical Art

Surgical sequences can share operative technique. Illustrations allow the important structures to be isolated and accentuated, expanding the field of view, shining through obstructing hands, tools, and anatomy. Distracting details like blood can be removed, especially if using the art to help patients understand the procedure. Years of disease progression, or hours of surgery can be shown over two to a handful of illustrations.

Recontructing the skull contour with a custom plate after prior craniectomy.

Pathology

Every disease has an origin story. Understanding these can be the foundation for understanding treatment.
Setting pathology in its anatomical and human context can help communicate it more tangibly to medics and patients.

Above: Medical illustrations for a series of publications on rare diseases for RadioGraphics. My goal has been to help tie together the different imaging modalities (CT / surgical photo & video / macroscopic specimen photography and histology), which each have their difficulties in interpretation, in a clear memorable way.
