Fixing a broken neck: an illustrated case journey
When Mr Singh falls and fractures his neck the future looks uncertain... Follow his case journey through this illustrated story by Dr Ciléin Kearns (Artibiotics). This comic was made possible by the generous support of a collaborative Kickstarter with Brainbook, (a charity dedicated to Neurosurgery public engagement and education).
This story is a fictional amalgamation of real case experiences. I wanted to present the neurosurgery case in a more human context that purely technical text or art. I think this is a more memorable way to experience healthcare, and can connect on a deeper level.
The comic was just one half of the content designed for our case on neck fractures; check out the YouTube video Brainbook produced and I illustrated. This explores a real-life fusion surgery with first-person GoPro footage showing the surgeons’ side of the story!
Finally, a special thanks is needed for all our backers; these generous folks are the reason we were able to create this content openly and freely for all to enjoy and learn from - thank you.
