Sjögren's syndrome illustrated

Sjögren's syndrome is a condition where the immune system attacks the cells that make tears and saliva. This results in very dry eyes and mouth. While these symptoms can be debilitating on their own, unfortunately for some, the disease has wider effects too such as extreme fatigue, and recurrent chest infections.

I created these illustrations for a Rheumatologist to support their research and teaching efforts. I hoped to go a little beyond just sharing the science, and also promote awareness and empathy for those suffering. Little hints of story and emotion can be powerful so I try to sneak them into my work wherever possible.

That's it for this one. Sjögren's can be a nasty ailment - I hope we keep developing better care and understanding until it can be cured!
