Illuminating Radiology: Bridging the Gaps with an Illustrated Stepping Stone

A comic of thoughts on the role of medical illustration

Where does medical illustration fit in Radiology, the imaging speciality? A comic from a short Editorial article I wrote and illustrated for RadioGraphics Issue 41 No.7: https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/rg.2021210200

I’ve just become the Associate Editor of Medical Illustration for the journal thanks to the Editor, Professor Christine (Cooky) Menias, who put my name forward for this role. This comes after a wonderful year of working together via the RadioGraphics Trainee Editorial Assistant Member (RG-TEAM) group to introduce her new visual journal section ‘Cases from the Cooky Jar’ exploring imaging findings for rare disease, which I’ve been illustrating each issue. I look forward to more opportunities to support Radiology education with comics and illustration!

'Liminal space' can describe the disorientation experienced in the middle stage of a journey

As a medical illustrator, I spend a lot of my time navigating liminal spaces

Making journeys to learn about unfamiliar and often niche topics

And when at last I understand

I turn back

And try to share an easier path to that knowledge

Stepping stones for those who come next
